Video Game Design Classes for Kids Ages 5-7

At 5 to 7 years old, kids are natural storytellers and problem-solvers—they just don't know it yet. Video game design classes tap into this stage perfectly, giving young learners a chance to turn their wild ideas into something real. Instead of just playing games, they'll create simple games themselves, learning how decisions affect outcomes. This hands-on approach builds logical thinking without feeling like work, because they're doing what they already love.

Our classes keep things age-appropriate with shorter 25-40 minute sessions and small groups of 3-6 students, so your child gets genuine attention while staying engaged. They'll explore basic game mechanics, simple pixel art, and playable designs—all the building blocks that make games tick. Most importantly, they'll finish class with actual games they made, which builds real confidence. Starting at just $16 per class, there's no pressure to commit to a huge package while your child explores a new skill.

Working with mentors who understand game design, kids learn that creating something takes planning and creativity, not magic. They practice thinking through problems, testing ideas, and making changes when something doesn't work. These are skills that carry far beyond the gaming world into everything they do.

What Ages 5–7 Learn in Video Game Design

Simple Game Mechanics & Rules

Kids discover how games work by learning basic rules, win/lose conditions, and turn-taking. They'll understand what makes a game fun and playable, using visual tools and hands-on activities designed for their age.

Character Design & Storytelling

Students create colorful, imaginative characters and simple story ideas for their games. They learn to draw, name, and describe characters with personalities, helping them think about who will be in their game world.

Interactive Design with Drag-and-Drop Tools

Using kid-friendly, no-code game design platforms, children build their first playable games by dragging and dropping elements. No typing or complex coding required—just creative thinking and mouse skills.

Problem-Solving & Creative Thinking

As kids design games, they learn to test ideas, fix problems, and improve their creations. This builds early computational thinking skills in a fun, game-based context that feels like pure play.

Why Ages 5–7 Is a Great Time for Video Game Design

Ages 5–7 are in the perfect window for visual and imaginative learning, and video game design channels this natural creativity into structured thinking. At this age, children are naturally drawn to games and can understand simple cause-and-effect relationships—exactly what game design teaches. They're also developing fine motor skills and beginning to follow multi-step directions, making drag-and-drop design tools both accessible and engaging. This age group learns best through play and immediate feedback, both of which are built into game design activities.

Early elementary students are developing their ability to think about rules, sequences, and goals—core concepts in game design. Unlike older kids, this age group benefits from short, focused sessions (25–40 minutes) that match their attention span while still allowing for meaningful creative output. Game design classes also build confidence in young learners by letting them create something tangible and interactive that they can immediately play and share, fostering a sense of accomplishment that motivates continued learning and exploration.

Video Game Design for Ages 5–7 FAQ

Do my kids need any experience with computers or games to join?
No experience is necessary! These classes are designed for complete beginners using intuitive, visual tools that require no reading or typing. We teach computer skills alongside game design in a fun, supportive way.
Will my child actually create and play a game in 25–40 minutes?
Yes! Because we use no-code, drag-and-drop platforms and start with very simple games, kids build and test their own playable games in almost every session. They'll often complete a basic game and have time to play it themselves or with classmates.
What kind of games will my child design?
At this age, kids design simple games like chase games, collection games, memory games, and story-based adventures. The focus is on fun, creative ideas rather than complex mechanics, so every child feels successful regardless of ability level.
Are these classes too screen-heavy for young kids?
Our sessions balance screen time with hands-on activities, including drawing characters, brainstorming games on paper, and discussing ideas before designing. For K–2nd graders, screen time is always interactive and purposeful, never passive.
